Tales of Sevrin
If you've read and enjoyed my Forgotten Realms stories, chances are you'll feel right at home in the islands of Sevrin, the setting of a new "e-riginal" fantasy series.
Twenty years ago, the people of Sevrin overthrew Eldreath, the sorcerer who'd ruled for as long as anyone could remember. A Council of Adepts--men who know the secrets of alchemy and build marvelous clockwork creations--now rules the land. The old ways are suppressed and magic is highly suspect.
Fox Winterborn, a young thief, is determined to see magic return to the land. His exploits strike a chord in the hearts of those who find the Adepts' regime repressive. Whispers of rebellion prompt Rhendish, the adept who rules the largest of Sevrin's islands, to find Fox and put a stop to his dreams.
But Fox has gathered several powerful allies: a young dwarf, an exiled fairy, an alchemist of great brilliance but dubious mental stability, and am elf named Honor.
Every member of his little band has secrets of his or her own. The person Fox is most inclined to trust--the elf who once saved his life--is bound to Rhendish in ways she herself does not fully understand. The first two books of the Thorn Trilogy, HONOR AMONG THIEVES and HONOR BOUND, are available now. WORD OF HONOR will be out in March 2012.

To the south of Stormwall, the fortress island guarding the approach to the Sevrin archipelago, lies a tiny, wooded island known as Faunmere. Like most of Sevrin’s islands, it offers few hospitable havens for boats. The water drops off suddenly, and … Continue reading
Works in progress
Honor Among Thieves and Honor Bound are available as ebooks, but since I’m the publisher of this series as well as the author, the term “work-in-progress” is more complex than it used to be. Honor Among Thieves, the first book … Continue reading
Hot dwarves? Yes, please.
Delgar, the dwarf in the Tales of Sevrin series, is young, physically fit, very muscular–the sort of guy the phrase “ruggedly handsome” was meant to describe. (Okay, yeah. Nathan Fillion also qualifies.). I’ve been searching for months for images of … Continue reading
Middle books
One of the writing challenges often addressed in how-to books and workshops is dealing with the story’s middle. Beginnings are easy, which is why many more novels are begun than completed. Stories tend to bog down in the middle, or go off … Continue reading
SEVRIN LORE: The dryad Minue
Elves belong to the natural world, and their ties to the land, the stars, and the seasons are deep and profound. Fairies belong to the fey realms, a strange and alien place on another plane of existence. But there are portals … Continue reading
February contest: Crossing the Streams
I’m very pleased to join over a dozen speculative fiction writers–mostly novelists, but some short story and comic writers as well–in a contest designed to introduce readers to new voices. Here’s how it works: Each author involved is running a … Continue reading
What is magic?
I grew up among people who believed in the power of prayer. And although they also believed in a loving deity who had a Plan, prayer was seen as something that attracted divine attention and focused power toward a particular end. … Continue reading
HONOR BOUND release
After a couple of glitchy starts, Honor Bound is online in most of the major ebookstores. As of the morning, it still hasn’t appeared in the iTunes/iBooks store, but I’ll post a note when it’s available at this site. Since this … Continue reading
