A: First, understand that
these worlds are the property of Wizards of the Coast. You can't
publish a story using these settings or referring to established
characters except through WotC. Even electronic publishing is
touchy. People generally assume that fanfic is okay as long as you're not
paid for it, but anything based on copyrighted worlds or characters is of
dubious legality.
If you have an idea for a trilogy and hope to
get it accepted and published as is, I'd have to say your chances are
pretty slim. Shared worlds require a great deal of continuity
work and editorial oversight. Any specific project you might submit
is likely to contradict or duplicate some soon-to-be-published work, and
as such, will probably meet with rejection.
But! If you've got a terrific idea and
great characters, by all means develop them. You'll do your best writing
if you're passionate about your subject. Use this story to showcase your
writing ability and your understanding of the setting. Submit it according
to guidelines given on the official Wizards of the Coast website,
but understand that THIS IS AN AUDITION PIECE. If your writing
really clicks, you may be offered an assignment.
WotC has been actively seeking new writers through
open call competitions, so keep an eye on their website for new
opportunities. The (fairly) recent Maiden of Pain open call yielded many
promising submissions, and some of these folks have been called back for
short stories and solo novels.
