  1. Any future for Liriel? Great character, just curious if you plan on any future works with her. I realize that I’m a bit behind on power curve in the Forgotten Realms, but I started reading the Drizzt series 6 years ago and now I can’t stop emersing myself in all the wonderful characters and stories out there to be had. Keep up the great writing.

    1. Hi, Dan. Thanks for the kind words. At this time, I have no plans to continue Liriel’s story, but I certainly have nothing against the notion! She was a lot of fun to write, even during the more difficult moments of her story, and I’d welcome the opportunity to continue her adventures. And readers still ask for her, even though her last book came one in–yikes!–2003.

      1. Hi Elaine! Stumbled upon here while looking for Liriel fan art. She is a great character and lots of fun to read. I’d like to add that I would new novel featuring Liriel would for sure be per-orderd by me at the store! I have also currently finished Elfsong for the first time. It was much enjoyed 🙂

  2. Dark Journey remains one of my favorite Star Wars books. I was very sorry that Blood Oath didn’t get released, as you have a real gift for capturing the characters, their personalities, and motivations. Do you have a more detailed description of Jaina’s red dress?

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Maggie! I don’t really have anything to add to the description of Jaina’s red dress, but now that you mention it, that would be a fun project. I’m working on learning Poser and PhotoShop, and a teenaged Jaina in decadent red gown is the sort of image those programs were made to create. It’ll be a while before I get to that level of facility, but I’ll put it on the list.

  3. Dear Elaine,

I have really enjoyed your novels written in the Forgotten Realms. I was wondering if you will be writing in the Realms again? Is this a Wizards of the Coast decision or can you let them know the minute you are ready to write? Your writing style brings characters alive! You are one of my favorite authors. I have missed your “signature” in Faerun! Wishing you the very best, and hoping for a Realms affecting book!

  4. Good evening Elaine,
I am in the works of changing all my soft paper backs to hard covers and try as I might I am unable to find hard cover copies of your Songs & Swords series and the Starlights and Shadows ‘s Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs and Windwalker triology.
Any ideas as to where I could get my hands on these hardcovers ?
    Thank you 🙂

    1. Hi, Catherine.

The Songs & Swords books were released as paperback originals, so there are no hardcover versions. The Starlight & Shadows trilogy was originally released in hardcover, but that was several years ago. Your best bet is probably third party sellers.

  5. I know there are currently no plans to continue with any Liriel stories, however I just wanted to add my voice to the others lauding your works with her and say I truly, sincerely hope to see her in print again, she is my absolute favorite Forgotten Realms character. Could you point me towards a link, or list of other works that have her in it besides the Starlight and Shadows series?

  6. Elaine
Good day to you. I see by reading the other comments I am not alone in wishing your return to the Realms! I read (for at least my third time) The Arilyn & Danilo stories. I hope after the Sundering (its not right you were not one of the six) is complete you,ll take us on another adventure.
    God bless you & yours

  7. Hi Elaine,
First I want to say how much I enjoy it,to read your Forgotten Realms books.
From start to make you feel in a living world into offset.
The brand recognition value is the very successful 🙂
Finally, a question:”Could you please send me an autographed picture?”
Furthermore, I would be very happy.

I wish you all the best, und sende dir grüße aus Ludwigshafen am Rhein,Deutschland

    Dennis Männl

    1. Hi, Dennis. Thanks for the kind words and best wishes!

I have long been of the opinion that autographed photos are for celebrities–people who are public figures. Writers tend to be private people who are much more at home behind the computer than behind the camera. 🙂 So I’m afraid I don’t have author photos to send.

      Best wishes,

  8. I’m a huge fan of your work and the amazing characterization you can put into your books. I am especially in love with your characters in the Songs & Swords series. I know you mentioned back in the early 2000s some ideas about writing about Elaith, Danilo, and Arilyn again. I was wondering if the changes in 5E might make that more or less likely. I really do miss them.

    1. Hi, Adara. Thanks for the kind word. I’m pretty fond of the Songs & Swords gang, myself, and I’m love to revisit these old friends. At present, however, I’m working on other projects.

As for your question about 5E, I’m not sure that the change would make much difference. Last I heard, WotC wants to keep all novels in “current time,” and since 4E including a 100-year jump into the future, most story lines ended along with the natural lives of the characters who lived them. But in a high-magic world, there are ways around such things.

    1. Hi, Louise. Thanks for the kind word! One of these years I really need to schlepp down to Comic Con. I love the creativity people put into costumes. If you have photos of yours, I’d love to see them. Facebook link, perhaps?

  9. Dear Elaine,
Your contributions to the Forgotten Realms are equivalent to that of Ed Greenwood and Bob Salvatore in my humble opinion, and I’ve loved your realistically descriptive writing style and characterizations since I picked up Elfshadow many moons ago. I’ve recently begun reading the Sundering Series, and truly hope to see your creative touch upon the Realms once again. Speaking of a sundering, Evermeet: Isle of the Elves remains one of my favorite novels and the digital version is extremely helpful as a gaming reference. Lastly, seeing Danilo in the Lords of Waterdeep boardgame (expansion) brought back many fond memories of reading about his adventures with Arilyn. Thank you for those!

    1. Hi, Justin. Thanks for the lovely comment. The Realms is my first fictional homeland and will always have a special place in my heart.

I was extremely tickled to learn that Danilo was included in the LoW expansion, but he would like to have a word with whoever painted the portrait on that card. 🙂

  10. I really love and enjoyed The Changeling Detective Agency series and was wondering if you ever plan to continue it

    1. Hi, Mattie. Thanks for your note! I’d love to return to Gwen’s story, but I’m not sure when that will be. I’m only writing part time these days, so there just aren’t enough hours to spread over all the stories I’d like to tell. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific. I should have a better idea of my schedule fairly soon.

  11. Any word on whether you will bless us with more Forgotten Realms writing, now that the changes have taken place in the Realms?

I have missed reading about Liriel (and Danilo), since I put down the finals books in those series, many moons ago. I fell so much in love with Liriel, that I spent the last 12 years, playing her as a character in a MUD (text based multiuser game).

I really hope you will return to us, and give us the privilege of, once again, reading about your fantastic characters, and their lives.

Thank you, for what you have brought to the Forgotten Realms, and here is to hoping you will bring even more.

    1. Hi, Johnny. Thanks for the note. I miss Liriel, Dan, and the gang, but I’m not sure what the future will hold for the Forgotten Realms, much less any of my characters. It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, the D&D movies that’s in development (and set in the Realms) will have on WotC’s plans for the fiction line.

  12. Hey Elaine!

I just finished reading “The Dream Spheres” and googled your name to see if there is more. I really, REALLY loved those five books, one of my favorites with Tolkiens and J.K.Rowlings books. You did great job writing them. The part I liked best in them is that they don’t give the plot straight to reader, reader has to use his brains. I also really liked that charachters are not so predictable, logical but not simple. My only complain is that it was sometimes hard to tell, who was talking.

I saw that you haven’t published any books in couple of years, and wanted to ask are you still planning to make some. I will for sure read all your ther books and then try to find som other author kinda like you 🙂 Maybe you (or someone other) can suggest somebody?

Fresh water and light laugh till we meet again! (Even tough we have never met, I just wanted to use it :-b)

    1. Hi, M.J. Thanks for the kind words. I haven’t been writing much for several years now–mostly short fiction. I’m not sure when I’ll get back to novels. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely that I’ll be able to continue the adventures of Arilyn, Danilo, and Elaith. Most of the existing story lines ended when the publisher jumped the timeline ahead 100 years, and they are not publishing stories that don’t take place in “current time.”

If you’re interested in Forgotten Realms books that have a scope and tone similar to the Songs & Swords series, I’d suggest the books by Jeff Grubb and Kate Novak. You might also like Jaleigh Johnson’s books.

      1. Ok 😀
Thank you for letting me know. I will check them out.
It is shame that you can’t continue it, but maybe you can write something even better! (Or find a way around it. e.g. In highly magical place like Faerûn, time travel would propably be possible, you wil figure out something!)

  14. Hi Elaine.

I’ve just managed to stumble across the Changeling series and found it massively enjoyable.
I’d just like to echo Mattie’s comments above and hope that you find time in your schedule to return to Gwen in the near future, without impinging on what I hope is an enjoyable time spent in other areas.

    Best regards,
